ეკლესიისა და სახელმწიფოს პოლიტიკურ-სამართლებრივი ურთიერთობების სწორად დარეგულირება სახელმწიფოების ერთ-ერთ უმთავრეს გამოწვევას წარმოადგენს. სამოქალაქო საზოგადოების ისტორიული განვითარების შესაბამისად სახელმწიფოები სხვადასხვა დროს ცდილობდნენ შეემუშავებინათ იმგვარი მმართველობითი ფორმა, რომელშიც ეკლესიის ინსტიტუციაც საკუთარი ფორმით იქნებოდა წარმოდგენილი. ამ მხრივ ერთ-ერთ განსაკუთრებულ ურთიერთობის სეკულარულ ფორმას ფრანგული Laïcité წარმოადგენს. შესაბამისად, წინამდებარე ნაშრომში წარმოდგენილია აღნიშნული მოდელის წარმოშობის ისტორია და განვითარების დინამიკა. განსაკუთრებული ყურადღება ეთმობა მის როლს თანამედროვე დემოკრატიული და სამართლებრივი მმართველობითი სისტემის ჩამოყალიბებაში და, საბოლოოდ, ეკლესიისა და სახელმწიფოს მშვიდობიან თანაცხოვრებაში.
